The slab is part of a larger system

A commercial slab is not an isolated finish. Subgrade preparation, reinforcing, thickened areas, footings, columns, penetrations and embedded items can all affect the placement. The concrete scope should be coordinated against structural requirements and the work of adjacent trades.

Footing types change the workflow

Commercial structures may use spread footers, column footers, stemwall conditions or monolithic slab configurations. Each arrangement changes excavation, forming, reinforcing and sequencing. The drawings and engineering requirements control the actual system for a project.

Coordination before placement matters

Plumbing, electrical and other penetrations are much easier to address before concrete is placed than after. Layout confirmation, embed checks and inspection timing should be treated as part of the pre-pour process rather than a last-minute task.

Finish and use should be understood early

A warehouse slab, back-of-house slab and future polished floor may have different expectations for appearance and downstream use. Communicating the intended function of the slab helps the project team coordinate finish requirements with later trades.
